1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch slices 6 large eggs 2 cups milk 1/2 cup heavy cream 3/4 cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into pieces 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and arrange the sliced bread in a single layer in the dish.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices. Press down lightly on the bread to help soak up the liquid. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 4 hours.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and uncover.
In a small bowl, combine the butter and brown sugar until crumbly. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the soaked bread.
Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the French toast is puffed and golden brown.
